What is Root Canal Treatment?
Root Canal Treatment is a dental procedure that involves addressing issues with the dental pulp, the soft centre of the tooth. The dental pulp is made up of nerve and blood supply that continues into the roots of the teeth and can become damaged and infected as a result of large decay, trauma, a crack or a chipped tooth. When the dental pulp becomes infected, root canal treatment may be recommended as an alternative to removing the tooth while eliminating the infection and resolving pain.
What is involved in Root Canal Treatment?
During a root canal treatment, local anaesthetic is given to make the tooth numb and a rubber sheet is then placed over the tooth. The dental pulp is removed, disinfected and the disinfected space is then sealed to prevent bacteria from re-entering. Depending on the cause of the infection, the tooth can be weak and prone to breaking. To protect a weak tooth, our dentist may recommend a crown after root canal treatment. As local anaesthetic is provided prior to starting any treatment, your root canal appointment can be pain free - some patients even fall asleep during their appointments with us!
Benefits of Root Canal Treatment
Previously, when the dental pulp became infected, the only option to resolve the pain was to remove the tooth. With modern advancements in dental care, dentists are now able to save teeth and provide an alternative option to losing teeth.
What happens if you wait too long to get Root Canal Treatment?
Waiting too long to get root canal treatment can result in tooth loss or even the spread of infection to other parts of the mouth and face. Generally, the earlier root canal treatment is started, the better the outcome.
